Take a moment.
Look around the gallery.
At first, you might simply see abstract paintings……swirling colours, layered textures and flowing organic forms.
But what if these paintings aren’t abstract at all?
What if they are maps of a world we rarely stop to notice?
A world beneath our feet, beneath the water, beneath every landscape we call home.



Nature has a hidden side
When we think of nature, we often picture forests, flowers, birds or oceans.
But what if the most important parts of an ecosystem are the ones we almost never see?
Tiny bacteria.
Invisible fungi.
Microscopic algae.
Underground fungal networks stretching for miles.
Insects no larger than your fingernail.
These organisms rarely appear on postcards, yet without them almost nothing else could survive.
They recycle nutrients.
Create healthy soils.
Help plants communicate.
Store carbon.
Feed wildlife.
Clean our water.
Quite literally, they keep the planet alive.
The first section of this exhibition asks a simple question:
How much of life is happening without us ever noticing?
As you study Zasmina’s paintings, imagine looking through a microscope rather than standing in a gallery.
Can you see cells dividing?
Root systems branching?
Colonies expanding?
Networks communicating beneath the soil?
Perhaps what first appeared chaotic now begins to reveal hidden order??

- Suffolk’s wildlife database contains over 6.5 million biological records.

- Nearly one in six British species is now at risk of extinction.

Small doesn’t mean insignificant.
Sometimes the smallest organisms carry the biggest responsibilities.


Rising Tides
Can water remember?
Think about the last drop of rain you saw.
Where did it come from?
Perhaps it evaporated from the North Sea.
Perhaps it once flowed through the River Orwell.
Perhaps it travelled thousands of miles through the atmosphere before falling here.
Water never really stays still.
It is constantly moving.
Constantly connecting.
Constantly reshaping the world around us.
Now imagine that movement becoming faster.
Storms growing stronger.
Sea levels creeping higher.
Coastlines slowly disappearing.
This isn’t science fiction.
It’s happening now.
Suffolk has one of the fastest-changing coastlines in Britain.
Entire habitats are changing.
Saltmarshes are shrinking.
Communities are adapting.
Wildlife is searching for somewhere new to survive.
The flowing forms within Zasmina’s paintings mirror this constant movement.
No edge remains fixed.
No boundary is permanent.
Just like nature itself.
Pause and ask yourself…
💧 What happens when the systems we rely on begin to change?
💧 How many species depend upon a single river?
💧 Could one small change upstream affect an entire coastline?
The answer is yes.
Because water connects everything.
Did you know?
- Suffolk has over 60 miles of coastline.
That’s about the same distance as travelling from Ipswich to Cambridge. Along that stretch are beaches, marshes, estuaries and some of the UK’s most important wildlife habitats.https://coastandheaths-nl.org.uk
- Every winter, the Orwell and Stour Estuaries welcome tens of thousands of migratory birds.
Imagine Portman Road Stadium filled to capacity—then imagine even more birds arriving from places as far away as Iceland, Greenland and the Arctic, all stopping here to rest and feed.
- Sea levels around the UK are rising by around 3–4 mm every year.
That’s about the thickness of two £1 coins stacked together.
It doesn’t sound like much, but over 30 years that’s around 10 centimetres (4 inches)—enough to increase coastal flooding, accelerate erosion and gradually reshape our coastline.https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/climate-change/effects-of-climate-change



Fragile Habitats
What does an ecosystem look like when pieces begin to disappear?
Imagine removing one flower from a meadow.
Not much changes.
Now remove every tenth flower.
Then every fifth.
Then half.
Suddenly fewer bees arrive.
Fewer seeds are produced.
Birds lose food.
Plants stop spreading.
The whole system begins to weaken.
Habitats don’t disappear overnight.
They disappear piece by piece.
The floral installations in this gallery represent exactly that.
One vase overflows with life.
The other begins to empty.
It’s a simple image.
Yet it tells one of the biggest environmental stories of our time.
The question isn’t simply:
“What have we lost?”
It’s also:
“What could we still save?”

- Around 75% of Suffolk and Norfolk’s most important habitats now exist as isolated fragments.
Imagine if three out of every four roads in your town suddenly disappeared. Getting from one place to another would become incredibly difficult. That’s the challenge wildlife faces when habitats become cut off from one another.https://www.norfolkbiodiversity.org
- Many species can no longer move freely between habitats because the land connecting them has disappeared.

- One of conservation’s biggest goals today isn’t just protecting habitats—it’s reconnecting them.

Connected nature survives.



Interconnected Waters
What if nothing in nature truly exists alone?
Think back through the exhibition.
The microorganisms.
The rivers.
The coastlines.
The flowers.
The insects.
The birds.
Now imagine drawing lines between all of them.
Those lines would never stop.
Every organism depends upon another.
A bee depends upon flowers.
Flowers depend upon healthy soils.
Healthy soils depend upon fungi.
Fungi depend upon moisture.
Moisture depends upon climate.
Climate affects every living thing.
Nature isn’t made up of separate parts.
It is one enormous conversation.
One continuous network.
One living system.
That is what Zasmina’s final paintings invite us to see!
Not individual landscapes.
But relationships.
Because protecting nature isn’t simply about saving one species.
Or planting one tree.
Or cleaning one river.
It’s about protecting the connections that allow life itself to exist.
