As Ipswich evolved, so too did the building. Throughout its history, it has served many different purposes, reflecting the changing needs of the local community. At various times, it has been used as a museum, providing a space to preserve and share local history and culture.

The building also stood witness to significant moments in Ipswich’s social history. It became associated with public gatherings, including demonstrations and periods of civil unrest, while continuing to act as an important civic space where people came together.

Long before it became MOTE, this building had already established itself as a place shaped by community, conversation and change.
